Evidence Based Resources

NHS Evidence

Built around a powerful search engine, provides access to the best evidence based resources, especially good for guidelines, policies and reviews. It also provides links to other NHS resources, such as healthcare databases, electronic medical journals.

Healthcare databases

AMED, BNI, CINAHL, Embase, Health Business Elite, HMIC, Medline and PsycInfo databases providing access to millions of references from health care journal literature, including original research articles. Use these databases for undertaking more comprehensive searches including journal articles. NHS Athens username and password required.

British National Formulary

Provides UK healthcare professionals with authoritative and practical information on the selection and clinical use of medicines in a clear, concise and accessible manner. It can be searched through NHS Evidence Medicines .

Map of Medicine

Displays current, evidence-based clinical knowledge in an easy-to-use visual Pathways format, reflecting the patient journey.

TRIP

Medical search engine with emphasis on evidence based medicine (EBM) and clinical guidelines and queries, including content from Cochrane. This source provides high quality, relevance based EBM results in a well structured and easy to use format.

The Cochrane Library

Several databases containing summaries of the effects of treatments in health care, including full-text Cochrane systematic reviews and DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects). This source provides high quality, independent, evidence based information.

Specialist Collections (now integrated into NHS Evidence search)

To access evidence that was previously available within the individual specialist collections, as well as some new content, you need to use the search box on NHS Evidence - type in your search terms and relevant results will be displayed. Much of the content may also be found under the new A-Z Topics feature of NHS Evidence.

Ovid

Provides an alternative access route to the healthcare databases such as Medline and Embase as well as a set of electronic medical journals including the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins High Impact collection. Athens username and password required. Direct full-text access to Ovid journal titles only.

Proquest Hospital Collection

includes ProQuest Health and Medicine databases, full text health science journals and evidence-based nursing information from The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). These resources include Systematic Reviews, Evidence Summaries, Best Practice Information Sheets, Training Videos, reports and documents. Athens username and password required.

MyLibrary /MyAthens

The above are major electronic resources that NHS staff in London can access. However there may be further databases or journals that are purchased by your local NHS library or Trust which are not shown here. These may be found by logging into My Library or MyAthens. To see the list of resources in My Library, scroll down to My Athens Resources.  If using My Athens, select the resources tab and then the local resources tab.
